Volleyball is one of those sports that is easy to shoot but very hard to shoot well. Everything happens in a micro seconds and it is super difficult to be there before it happens. I found out that some of this can be fixed by the size of the gymnasium. I shot at Plainwell and love that gym, tons of room behind the baseline. A couple other gyms I felt cramped and too close to the net. I also love that volleyball is now faster in terms of scoring. I remember being at a match that kept sideing out for like a half hour! The one downside to that is I can’t explore angles like I used too. I have to find a good angle and stick with it for most of the game. As it is said, everything is permeable.

Yes it is that weird in between time where some sports seasons are coming to an end and others are ramping up for the beginning. Western Michigan Basketball played a pre season game against Kalamazoo College. It did the job, I am excited for basketball!

High School Playoffs are coming...

...and that means no more Friday night games and more Saturday day games! My favorite time of year! You can use bigger glass and get gorgeous light most times. I have not been to High School Football Championships at Ford Field in a long time so here is to crossing my fingers for Southwest Michigan Football!!!

It is always hard to find something unique in some sports...golf and swimming come to mind immediately. After waiting for my equipment to defog I tried to think of a new angle. Here is what I came up with.

Soccer or Football...

The recent playoffs have seen me attend a few soccer games. I shoot sports all year round and out of all of them I see the most cheating, the most referee abuse and just plain disrespect for sportsmanship at soccer. Man Oh Man does it make for good pictures!

Have totally enjoyed covering all the Western Michigan Football Games. The weather has been fantastic and the games have been packed full of action. They looked so great starting out against University of Michigan! Good luck to the WMU football team in their last few away games!

Being on deadline can suck. I had a half to shoot this game and get back in time to edit and send back to the paper. It was one of those games where I was just in the right place at the right time for the entire half! The sad thing is the game went down to the final seconds and an onside kick recovery to win the game. Damn deadline...

So I missed posting the first high school football game of the season. Allegan versus Vicksburg and sadly probably the last game with sunlight and dry weather...is it fall already!

Rain Soaked

Jokes were being made in the press room as people chatted about the upcoming game and the possible storm system that would hit Ann Arbor, MI in the middle of the game. But after walking out into 90 degree baking hot weather for the first half the thought of rain was the furthest thing from my mind. Western Michigan looked very solid for about 15-20 minutes then Michigan’s quarterback Denard Robinson and the defenses Brandon Herron made some great plays and the Broncos were in trouble. Half time came and it was sunny as I walked in the tunnel and as I sat down in the press room and looked at the monitor it had started raining buckets. In a historical move the game was canceled and the stadium was evacuated. Jonathan, the Kalamazoo Gazette photographer, and I stayed out getting soaking wet as eyeball sized raindrops came pelting down. The rain stopped and then a huge bolt of lighting streaked across the sky and it was time for us to head for cover. What a great start to the football season!!

I had the opportunity to shoot the other big rivalry in Michigan college football. Western Michigan vs Central Michigan. It was a great game. I had some great pictures then had a whole 4GB card crash on me...so these are just pictures from my 70-200mm camera. I lost so many pictures!!!!
